The front wrapper includes a handsome charcoal lithograph portrait of Kane in formal attire. Kane was the senior medical officer of the first United States Grinnell expedition in 1850-1 sent to search for the lost expedition of Sir John Franklin. After returning safely from this arduous journey, "Kane spent the next year (1851-2) travelling and delivering lectures to packed audiences on his experiences in the Arctic, and wrote the only book-form narrative of the expedition (published in 1854)....Kane's adventures, although never told publicly by the man himself, became a larger part of his legend after his death mainly due to the efforts of the biographer William Elder, who dedicated fifty sensational pages to them in his BIOGRAPHY OF ELISHA KENT KANE (1857)" - Howgego. HOWGEGO 1850-1940 K2.
