Book DescriptionImpact Pub, 1994. Trade Paperback. Good. front cover creased. Book summaryDenise Beckfield's book operates from the concept that one's potential for anxiety is linked to personality. The typical anxiety-sufferer is often sensitive, worries a lot, lacks self-confidence, and has catastrophic beliefs. In order to overcome these problems, sufferers need to identify "anxiety producing self-talk" and learn to gradually expose themselves to the source of their fears, and ultimately, to surrender to them. For example, a fear of shopping malls could be addressed by just sitting in one's car in the mall parking lot and practicing SRB (Stop, Refocus, Breathe). Another of Beckfield's exercises involves purposely invoking the panic sensations one fears in order to overcome them. She also discusses anti-anxiety medication such as benzodiazapenes and anti-depressants, journaling, meditation, and exercise. These all may work for awhile, but as a "cure" Beckfield stresses the acclimation method, which involves the gradual surrendering of control in order to move forward into a greater understanding of oneself, one step at a time. With the help of this succinct and informative book, sufferers may find the strength to do just that.Other Recommended Books
