Book desription: New York: Weatherhill, 1992. 236 pp. Color and black-and-white illustrations, bibliography, index. A finely produced reprint edition (now also out-of-print) of the original published by Kodansha International in 1981. An important reference book as well as providing a fascinating, comprehensive look into the life, training, techniques, and designs of a celebrated modern master carver of netsuke (small, carved wood or ivory toggles or buckles used by the Japanese to attach pouches to kimono belts). According to Bushell, Masatoshi reluctantly divulged information about his life and art over the course of many years and many conversations, the first such account by a netsuke carver. This lavishly illustrated book also serves as a catalog to the major part of Masatoshi's beautiful artistic creations.
