Peter Rabbit Sledgingby POTTER, Beatrix |
Book desription: 1900. An Original Watercolor Drawing of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix PotterPOTTER, Beatrix (1866-1943). Peter Rabbit Sledging. [N.p.: n.d., ca. 1900]. Early pen-and-ink and watercolor drawing. Depicts two rabbits, wearing blue sweaters, in the snow, with one rabbit pulling a sled which has overturned on the other rabbit. Image size: 3 x 4 inches; 90 x 115 mm. Exhibited: The British Art of Illustration 1800-1995. Matted, framed, and glazed.Anne Wright Hobbs (past curator of the Victoria and Albert Museum) saw this painting on our stand at the recent London International Antiquarian Book Fair and told us of this painting's importance. She subsequently sent us an email saying that she had found two other very similar drawings to this one."The unfinished preliminary study is from the Linder Bequest at the V&A (LB 1009, but the catalogue entry not worth searching out: no more information than I have given you here). The medium is watercolour and sepia ink over pencil. "The finished picture is one of a pair of designs from the Free Library of Philadelphia (FLP no. is: RBD BP ART 10a). This design was reproduced on the cover of their 1966 souvenir booklet. The other one (I don't have a copy) shows the rabbits progressing from right to left, one pulling along the sledge in which the other rabbit sits; there is a signpost on the left. The picture is initialed (bottom right): 'HBP', and dated: '94'. It is reproduced in a little guide to the Free Library of Philadelphia's Beatrix Potter collections (1996), which erroneously describes it as 'n.d.'! That picture is also reproduced on the front page of the exhibition list for a display shown in 2001-2002. "The two Free Library of Philadelphia designs are drawn on recto and verso of a card, 9x12 cm. The first drawing is also inscribed (lower right corner): 'turn over'. It was given to the Free Library of Philadelphia by W. Atlee Burpee, 1959. (See greeting card issued by the Free Library of Philadelphia, entitled 'Bunnies in the snow'.) "Beatrix Potter seems to have made several versions of the rabbit card, or at least of one of the designs. The pre-tumble scene features on a card sent to the sisters Elizabeth and Eleanor Lupton, second cousins of BP, and as sold by Kidson-Trigg of Swindon in September 2006. "I am pretty sure that the Free Library of Philadelphia managed to acquire another version.
