Book summary

Adem is a 14-year-old Albanian boy living in Serb-occupied Kosovo. Like all Albanians living in Kosovo, Adem and his family have no power and have adopted a policy of passive resistance. However, they find that even peaceful protests can get you killed after Adem's sister is gunned down for reading a poem in public. Further suffering comes to the family when Adem is assaulted by three soldiers who carve the Serb insignia on his chest. After this act, Adem plots for his family's escape from Kosovo.

Media Reviews

"The story is not a pretty one, but it makes some powerful points about innocent people caught up in ethnic struggles and the horrors of life under a totalitarian regime."

   -- Kirkus
