Washington, D.C: Printed by E. De Krafft, 1819. First Edition. Benjamin Latrobe defends his work on the U.S. Capitol. In an 1818 government report Latrobe was taken to task for his design of an aspect of the U.S. Capitol. In this pamphlet, Latrobe discusses and defends his design and work on the buildings going into detailed specifics. 8 pages, disbound, very good. A rare piece dealing with the architect’s most famous work. Latrobe was America’s first professional architect designing the U.S. Capitol, adding the porticos to the White House, and he is credited for setting public architecture in the United States in the Greek Revival and Neoclassical styles, as well as designing a number important private buildings of the early American Republic.
