London: The Hogarth Press, 1932. First edition, first prnt. 3200 copies printed. Green cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering; dustjacket design by Vanessa Bell. Inscribed by Duncan Macdonald. "To Ester for Christmas 1932 Duncan Macdonald." Beginning toning at the board edges and faint beginning page toning; dustjacket with chipped spine ends, corner wear with some loss, short closed tear on the rear panel topedge, foxing and toned panels and spine; the interior has tape reinforcement to the spine ends and corners. The book is a tight, clean copy in Very Good+ condition; the dustjacket is in Good condition with a Duarfold mylar cover. Macdonald of the Lefevre Gallery was the art agent for Frances Hodgkins and a supporter of Duncan Grant and Clive Bell. Inscribed by Owner. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Association Copy.

boards : Common term for the covers of a hardbound book.
spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.
Association copy : A copy of a book which has been signed and inscribed by the author for a personal friend of colleague of the author.
chipped : A defect in which small pieces missing from the edges.
tight : Used to mean that the binding of a book has not been overly loosened by frequent use.
gilt : Decorative patterns imbedded into the affected portion of a book. Often appears on the boards or the spine, and may be very simple, to elegant, to ludicrous.
8vo : Short for Octavo, A book whose page size is approximately 8-10 inches tall. The size is based on a sheet of paper 25 inches by 38 inches, the size of paper traditionally used by book printers, which has been folded and cut into 16 pages..
Unfortunately often misunderstood to mean 8 volumes.
inscribed : a short note written by the author or a previous owner in the beginning of a book, generally accompanied by a signature.
closed tear : A tear in which no material has been lost.
