Book summary
This novella was originally published in Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction magazine, and takes place in the same universe (although not with the same characters or plotline) as the author's Company novels. Since being fired from the British Arean Company, xenobotanist Mary Griffith has made the best of the primitive living conditions on the planet Mars. She runs the tavern known as the Empress of Mars, and ably deals with whoever and whatever comes, be it lawyers, missionaries, miners in search of red Martian diamonds, or the biggest sandstorm anyone's ever seen. THE EMPRESS OF MARS won the 2004 Sturgeon Award.
