Book description: Collins, 1987. 1st edition. Hard covers, dust jacket. Fine/Fine. An interesting summary of Britain's botanical gardens, a category not well understood by the wider horticultural world and thus a rather endangered species. The author casts a critical eye over the design of the gardens, picking out some of the outstanding specimen plants and trees and giving a potted history of each garden. The author, a newspaper picture editor by profession, clearly demonstrates a profound understanding of the purpose of botanic gardens and has rendered a valuable service to them by highlighting their unique features. He rightly castigates Liverpool and Belfast (he might have added Southport to this list) for having lost their scientific impetus, and omits them from the detailed treatment. The only major omissions (apart from the most modern developments such as Wales and Eden) are the great private collections such as Hergest Croft, which perhaps deserve their own companion volume. 160 pp.
