Book Description

Original orange cloth with black spine and front cover titles. 172pp, seven pull page plates by Gilbert James. Stamped "Presentation Copy" and bearing the initials "EFB" (in Benson's hand) to the title page. Loosely inserted, a small calling card bearing the signature "E.F. Benson". The book is has a small faint mark to the front cover and both endpapers facing the pastedowns are acid-toned, else a sharp fine copy. This was one of the first collectible books I ever bought and although I knew it was a Presentation Copy, I didn't realise who the "EFB" was for several years. I later acquired Benson's mother's copy of his first book, the anonymously titled "Sketches From Marlborough", which had been signed by both mother and son, and suddenly realised to whom James had presented this copy of "The Five Jars". I also acquired a signed calling card from Benson (the one offered in this listing) which strongly suggested that is indeed the copy which M.R. James presented to his lifelong friend and fellow author of ghost stories, E.F. Benson.
