The Purple Sapphire And Other Posthumous Papersby 'Blayre, Christopher' (aka Edward Heron-Allen)
Book description: First edition, first issue (identical format to the companion volume 'Some Women Of The University'). Original blue-grey paper-covered boards with printed title label affixed to spine. Red and black title page, 210pp, eight short supernatural stories. Author introduction dated 1952 (part of the affectation of this being a posthumously published book). Includes title and pagination for the notorious story and dubiously erotic 'The Cheetah-Girl' although the tale was subsequently pulled by the publisher, with Heron-Allen opting to produce it in a private limited edition. This collection was later published in at least cloth editions (one a trade issue, one with gilt titles) with a dustwrapper depicting a man being savaged by a ghostly manifestation; a later collected edition was published in 1932 as 'The Strange Papers Of Dr Blayre' (adding extra tales), featuring a different dw. Fore and bottom edges untrimmed. The paper along the spine edges is cracked but the binding is not weakened, the spine label is soiled but complete. The faults are thus visual not structural, making this a little less than very good.
