Book summary

Monica is a young girl who wants to play with the moon and, luckily for her, her father is determined to make that wish come true. Using a long, long ladder, the father climbs a high, high mountain and is finally able to reach the moon, but it is too big and heavy for him to carry down to his daughter. The moon tells the father to wait, as it will soon be small enough for him to carry down to Monica. Indeed, when the moon is only a small slice, Monica's dad delivers the moon to her and she has a wonderful time playing with it until it grows so small that it disappears altogether. Later, Monica is pleased when the moon reappears in the sky where it eventually regrows into its full size. A celebration of achieving a seemingly impossible goal as well as an introduction to the concept of the moon's waxing and waning, this book features colorful collage illustrations, some on pages that unfold and extend.

First Line

Before Monica went to bed she looked out of her window and saw the moon. The moon looked so near. "I wish I could play with the moon," thought Monica, and reached for it.

Publisher Notes

Carle's classic tale about a father who's willing to literally give his daughter the moon offers comforting thoughts to young ones while it teaches a simple lesson about nature's cycles. Full color.

Synopses

Monica's father fulfills her request for the moon by taking it down after it is small enough to carry, but it continues to change in size. Some pages fold out to display particularly large pictures.
