"Yet my reaction to Tagore's poetry is the same as his to Dante's: 'When I was young I approched Dante, unfortunately through a translation. I utterly failed, and felt it my pious duty to stop, so Dante remained closed to me.' I had hoped Mr. Chakravarty would open Tagore's book for me, but he is too bound to the old Western image of Tagore as the mystic and a spiritualist to look beyond it. No doubt, his 'reader' will serve as a sop to well-meaning friends of India who wish to express their newly acquired interest in the non-Western world by a burst of enthusiasm."
