Book desription: New York, NY: Julian Messner, Inc., 1952. 562 pages. Green cloth hard cover, gold lettering on spine. Dust jacket is actually present, but some one cut the front and back fold-ins off, and pasted them in the book (they are no longer pasted as it must have come loose), and the rest of the jacket is just laid in. It appears that is was trimmed, so it no longer fits the book properly. It was by devious ways that Clyde Batchelor realized his dream of possessing a lavish Steamboat Gothic mansion on the Mississippi. The background of his astonishing success had been both sad and sordid; an orphan asylum was his first home, the city streets his playground. His success at crapshooting took him from the lowest dives of St. Louis and shantyboats to the gaming tables of the most spendid packets. During the War Between the States, he became a purveyor to sutlers and a speculator in tobacco and cotton. His first Southern associates were boarders and profiteers. And then he met Lucy Page..... Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
