Book desription: Scratchard and Letterman, 1820 This is essentially two books bound as one, all in poor condition. Preceding the main volume is a separately paginated "Account historical and descriptive of the Metropolis", ie a 145pp history of London. There then follows what is essentially an A-Z guide to the districts of London titled "London and its environs; or the General Ambulator and Pocket Companion for the tour of the Metropolis and its Vicinity, within the circuit of twenty-five miles, descriptive of the objects most remarkable for grandeur, elegance, taste, local beauty, and antiquity. Ilustrated by anecdotes, historical and biographical; sixteen elegant engravings, and a correct map. The Twelfth Edition, greatly improved and enlarged with an appendix containing Lists of Pictures in the Royal Palaces and Principal Mansions around London." Although the book is complete the leather backing to the spine is missing and the covers are held by ancient sticky tape. The leather covers are extremely scuffed and worn. Internally the binding is just holding. There is an owner inscription, dated 1820, and the same owner's bookplate on the inside front cover. A fascinating book in bad condition.. Full-Leather. Poor. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
