Book Description
New York:: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich,, January 8, 1975 (Copyright 1974). First Edition, First Printing (Second Issue). AS NEW. This set of book, musical score and recordings was first issued with vinyl records. The change to cassette tapes were made on request of several booksellers (presumably referring requests from their customers). Therefore, while Book and Musical Score are 1st Edition,1st Printing, the tapes -- made from the original masters -- make it Second Issue. Books and tapes are all AS NEW. Folio (9 x 12) Clothbound book with 4 cassette tapes recording the ceremony in a separate Folio clothbound box and the folio-sized musical score transcribed. The book is 282 pp bound in red and tan cloth of a Mazatec design, and is a tri-lingual transcription (Mazatec, Spanish, and English) of the ceremony. It includes General Index, Analytical Index, Notes on the Mazatec Language by George M. Cowan, Musicological Notes on the Ceremony by Willard Rhodes. Translations and transcription of the Velada (Mazatec, Spanish, and English) are by the Cowans and the text was examined and corrected by Maria Sabina herself. The book has 10 color and 15 B&W photographs taken during the ceremony plus 2 maps and a chart. The words and the music pre-date Cortez, as Dr. Wasson proves in his commentary. This set also includes four casette tapes of the ceremony in their own separate hard shell box bound in tan cloth, and the musical score transcribed on fine coated stock and bound in pale yellow textured paper covers. The three books include the publisher's original promotional letter, and are inside a carboard protective casing which in turn is inside the original shipping box which has the title & author label on it. The shipping box is somewhat soiled and a portion (1" x 3") of the unprinted bottom edge of the label is torn off. Other than damage to the original shipping box, every aspect of every piece is AS NEW.Both books were magnificently printed by Stamperia Valdonegra in Verona, Italy. The entire set will be packed in a larger box with ample cushioning for protection during shipping. Shipping rates will be determined by location and weight. Original Cloth The ceremony was held for a young man who had fallen ill. In the ceremony, the mushroom speaks through Maria Sabina, the shaman, and in this instance, she stated that the boy must die. After hearing the bad news, he died several days later. This is an extraodinary and unique document of an ancient ceremony, and there were fewer than 1000 sets made.
