The expedition was under the command of Capt. H.D. Trotter, who died during the explorations, only one of the reasons it was disastrous. Pages xx, 509 and viii, 511. Bound in contemporary reddish-brown full calf, with marbled endpapers and matching page edges. Covers have outer double gilt-ruled borders amd gilt dentilles along the board edges. Spines have raised bands with 2 black labels lettered in gilt; the spine panels had gilt decoration now mostly rubbed off, leaving the decoration in blind. Inside exceptionally clean and tight with no browning or foxing and the plates and maps fine. Gift inscription to William Henry Wentworth Fitzwilliam when he left Eton in 1858.
