Book Description

Antuerpiae ( Antwerp ): Martinum Nutium, MDCXXX ( 1630 ). ......................hardcover, leather bound, overall a Very Good copy with a re-backed spine, all text in Latin, paper is in great condition with a bit of browning in places, some brief marginalia, 1062 pages plus a lengthy index, full page illustration on the title page, ....Book is about 14 1/2" x 8 3/4"......The cover is tooled/stamped in blind with the Catholic IHS at the center with the lower part of the cross dipping into the upper "cavity" of the "H" in IHS. There are tooled brass clasps mounted onto leather flaps/hinges. The design on the clasps is simple lines, straight and crossed. There are nailed corner brass tips that are a single piece on the corners (therefore an "L" shape), wrapping around onto the fore edge of the boards, with smaller nailed brass runners along the upper and lower board edges closer to the spine, thus the leather binding would not rub along the edges. The boards are bevelled at the half way point of all edges, front and back cover ( not bevelled all the way around). Rear fixed endpaper is loose on one corner so I can see the substantial wood panel under the leather. Endpapers are a different type of paper than the text and title page(s). There is an ink name "?? DeLort curé de crevant, Diocese de Bourges" (some letters are difficult to interpret), as well there is an ink name in florid script on the title page, there are a couple of worm holes through the leather and into the paper but nothing too serious, .....from Wikipedia: "(Cornelii a Lapide) studied humanities and philosophy at the Jesuit colleges of Maestricht and Cologne, theology first, for half a year, at the University of Douai, and afterwards for four years at Louvain; he entered the Society of Jesus, 11 June, 1592, and, after two years' noviciate and another year of theology, was ordained priest 24 December, 1595. After teaching philosophy for half a year, he was made professor of Holy Scripture at Louvain in 1596 and next year of Hebrew also. Twenty years later, in 1616, he was called to Rome in the same capacity, where, on the 3rd of November, he assumed the office which he filled with such renown for many years after. The latter years of his life, however, he seems to have devoted exclusively to finishing and correcting his commentaries. He was a pious and zealous priest and an exemplary religious." ...........overall an impressive looking tome in a contemporary leather binding, jpegs available, originally published in 1616, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo. First Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good. Illus. by Leather Bound.
