Professor Thomas Meehan, Editor of the Gardeners' Monthly, which was to become Meehan's Monthly by the late 19th-Century, satisfied American's burgeoning interest in domestic horticulture with this work, the first comprehensive presentation of the native plant species. This varied treatise, the first of its kind, was produced for a wide circle of gardeners, not the strict horticulturist or botanist, and is aptly presented by American's venerable printing firm of L. Prang and Co. in Boston. The democratic medium of chromolithography is best utilized to illustrate the varied richness of the multitude of flowers, both wild and cultivated in America's 19th Century gardens and landscapes.
