Description

Henry S. King & Co. (London) 1877 First edition., 1877. 161 pages with 4 pages of Tennyson Extracts and 30 pages of publisher's ads at rear. 5" x 7" hardcover. A drama recounting the Battle of Hastings. PRESENTATION COPY with a HANDWRITTEN INSCRIPTION "to EDMUND PEEL from TENNYSON Dec. 1877". This is a presentation copy with a delicate handwritten inscription at the top of the half-title page "To Edmund Peel from Tennyson. Dec. 1877". It has been brought to my attention that although the inscription would imply that Tennyson inscribed the book himself, that it may actually have been done by his wife Emily. Underneath is a crudely cut and pasted publisher's compliments slip stating "Sent by Messrs. Henry S. King & Co. With the Compliments of the AUTHOR". The Edmund Peel, to whom Tennyson inscribed this book, is most likely the poet (1817 - 1885) author of JUDAS MACCABAEUS, ECHOES FROM HOREB, etc. He was also a Colonel of the 11th Hussars and nephew of Conservative Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel. Peel's POETICAL WORKS was, apparently, once praised by Tennyson. Inscribed books by Sir Alfred Tennyson, are uncommon and inscribed Presentation Copies, in the year of publication, are quite SCARCE. This is a UNIQUE COPY by the Poet Laureate to another contemporary poet, albeit perhaps a minor one. However, as mentioned above, the book's inscription may acutally be in Tennyson's wife Emily's hand. Provenance: At auction in Shanklin on the Isle of Wight, May 2007. Shanklin is about 20 miles from Freshwater where Tennyson's home, Farringford House, was located and where he lived from 1853 until the end of his life in 1892. Bound in original green cloth covers with gilt lettering on spine. CONDITION: Some rubbing along edges and corners with a couple of wear through spots on spine, front and rear endpapers cracked, but binding is still sound, overall, a Good to Very Good UNRESTORED copy. (Scans available on request.). Inscribed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good.
