The Marionettes by Faulkner, William
Charlottesville, [VA]: University Press of Virginia, 1975. Slipcase has one 1/4" spot on back, else fine as fine can be. Facsimile and first published edition; originally done in 6 holograph copies by Faulkner. Loose gatherings unopened in box, as issued. Copy L of 26 lettered copies hors de commerce; another 100 copies were printed for sale. None of the lettered copies have ever been offered at auction. This copy belonged to Joan St. C. Crane, Curator of Rare Books at UVa, who attended to the publication of this work. The edition was printed in memory of Linton Massey, the famous Faulkner collector who left his collection to the Alderman Library at UVa. It is signed on the colophon by four of the Special Collections staff, and Mary Massey, Linton's widow. Laid in: a signed autograph note from famous collector H. Bradley Martin pledging $5,000 in support of the publication; a signed autograph letter from collector John S. van E. Kohn, also pledging support; a four page signed autograph letter from Linton Massey to Joan Crane, written four months before his death; and his daughter Connie Massey's calling card. Also laid in are two photos of Linton Massey (one early, one late), two photos of Faulkner (both early and late); 2 photos of Faulkner's typewriter; a Prospectus; and an inscribed (to Crane) photograph of actress Ruth Ford who played Temple Drake. The letters of Kohn and Massey offer a fascinating glimpse of the book-collecting elite, who socialize, dine together and attend the major sales. Massey mentions attending the Chatsworth Sale while in London for the auction season. Short of a holograph copy, this is the best possible copy to have. Petersen A65.1a.
