Book summary

During the New Zealand gold rush in the mid-19th century, a young couple--Joseph and Harriet--settle on a farm near Christchurch in pursuit of fortune, but find themselves nearly destroyed by Joseph's obsession with gold: "the colour," as it is known. As Joseph goes off in search of it, Harriet sees their marriage crumble--but the gold eventually pulls her in as well.
