Illustrated endpapers, no inscriptions. 191pp. including 25 b/w line illustrations throughout text, pages clean and bright in a firm binding. This is the story of the arrival of maize to Europe as reflected in the works of the Renaissance herbalists. From botanists the author learned the distinguishing features of the plants themselves and the ways in which they are affected when maize if brought out of the tropics. From the art historians he learned the limitations, which the process of woodcutting imposes upon the illustrator. Under the guidance of language experts he interpreted the text and with the Spanish historians determined the probable extent to which the early literature of exploration had furnished information for the herbals.
