Hirschfeld, Leipzig. Inscribed to head of titlepage: "Ethel Jane Reid with love & thanks from George MacDonald" (Ethel Jane was likely related to Sir George Reid, who painted MacDonald's portrait in 1868, or possibly to Elizabeth Jesser Reid, founder of Bedford College for Women).
