Publisher Notes

In the fast-changing business forces of the 1990s, organizations are constantly faced with major transitions: entering joint ventures, adjusting to new technologies, tackling new markets, and facing aggressive new competition. According to J. Allan McCarthy, who has guided corporations around the world through over 200 transitions, most companies eventually become so overwhelmed by transition that they lose sight of their primary focus. In an attempt to regain their direction, many become what McCarthy calls "initiative junkies", jumping from total quality management programs to high-performance work teams, process reengineering, and other improvement programs. Rather than focusing the organization, however, such initiatives too often only cloud priorities and misallocate an organization's energy, time, and money. Drawing on more than 17 years of experience in facilitating transitions, McCarthy offers an alternative method for managing transitions effectively. McCarthy sets out a proven five-step transition formula to guide executives and managers through any sort of organizational transition and to achieve specific, realistic goals. He presents a method for clarifying the vision and mission of the company, and then for translating those goals into actionable small steps. He also shows how to most effectively sequence and prioritize those steps in order to achieve the smoothest transition possible, and offers advice on recognizing the impediments and prior commitments that frequently derail transitions. Throughout the process, McCarthy helps the reader to assess both the organization's structure, including its equipment, policies, and procedures, and the human resource capabilities thatthe transition will require. By following this seasoned expert's guidelines and heeding his warning about common transitional pitfalls, any organization can engage in faster, less disruptive, and more effective transitions.
