The author--Archibald Stansfield Belaney--alias `Wa-Sha-Quon-Asin,' alias `Grey Owl'--was born 1888 in Hastings, England. From childhood he dreamt of being a North American Indian; emigrated to northern Canada in 1905; said he was--& was accepted as--`Grey Owl, son of a Scot & an Apache'; learned wilderness ways from Ojibway Indians; married a young Iroquois woman; became much interested in Conservation; appointed to that duty at Prince Albert National Park, Saskatchewan. ||| When he died there in 1938, facts of his English birth & assumed Indian identity brought outcries from former admirers, obscuring his very real contributions. |
