Log College (20 miles N.E. of Philadelphia) was founded by Rev. William Tennent Sr. (1736) to satisfy Presbyterian requirement for an educated ministry. His 3 clergymen sons--William Jr., John, & Charles, attended Log College. Then in 1738, Philadelphia Synod required all candidates lacking Harvard, Yale, or European univ. diploma to be approved by a committee; (helped launch 1741 Church schism). ||| In 1747 the younger Tennents opened `College of N.J.' at Elizabeth, N.J.--later moved to Princeton--the present-day Princeton Univ. Past presidents include Revs. Jonathan Edwards (`The Great Awakening'), & James McCosh. Woodrow Wilson was first layman president; later U.S. President. |
