Magellan, at odds with Portuguese King, convinced the King of Spain that by sailing west, he could prove the rich Moluccan Spice Islands belonged to Spain, not Portugal. In September 1519, five ships + 265-man crew, financed by Spain, left Seville. Magellan's theory was proved, tho' he was killed by natives enroute. Three years later, only one ship with 18 surviving crewmen and 4 Indians limped back to honors in Seville. |
