Novelized biography of English Baptist missionary to India William Carey (1761-1834). Shoemaker by trade until age 24, he learned Latin, Greek, Hebrew; studied theology; was pastor of congregations. In India, he studied languages, natural history; collected rich store of Oriental knowledge. ||| 1801--became Prof of Sanskrit, Bengali & Mahratta at Fort William College, Calcutta. Moving to Serampore, 12 miles north of Calcutta, his press printed in 40+ Indian languages, issued a Mahratta grammar, a Bengali lexicon, & Bible translation in Hindustani dialects; edited/published Roxburgh's `Hortus Bengalensis' & `Flora Indica'; helped form Agricultural Society of India in 1820.
