Wycliffe (ca. 1330-84), English theologian, often styled `The Morning Star of the Reformation,' maintained Scripture, not Roman Church man-made rules, were highest expressions of Divine Law, & the Scriptures should be read by laymen in their own language--he promoted translating the Latin Vulgate into English. His doctrines fueled Milic's & Huss's revolt against Roman Church temporal authority, clerical wealth, simony, selling Papal indulgences, etc. Though condemned in Papal bulls as a heretic, Wycliffe died a natural death & was buried in consecrated ground (1384). 44 years later--in 1428--Pope Clement VIII ordered Wycliffe's remains exhumed, burned, & cast in the sea. |
