Nichols'; no card pocket or spine marks/label; removed card pocket left discoloration on facing endpaper; both covers' upper tips bumped; spine ends worn; spine somewhat faded; top edges gilt.. Frontispiece reproduces illuminated pg. in gray, red, & black; with tissue guard. Written in early 13th century ? ; preserved in a single MS. discovered about 1820 in a Tyrol castle. ||| 3 parts--(1) adventures of Hagen, king of Ireland; (2) story of Hettel, king of Hegelingen, who woos & wins Hagen's daughter Hilda; (3) Gudrun, daughter of Hettel & Hilda, betrothed to Herwic, king of Sealand. Instead, Gudrun is abducted by Hartmut of Normandy, whom she refuses to marry, whereupon she is forced to do menial servant work for 13 years until Herwic et al. come to rescue her. ||| Narrative poem of 32 tales; literary value is considered on a par with Nibelungen Lied, & The Iliad.
