His portrayal of Willie and Joe hit home with the troops; General Patton unsuccessfully tried to have him give W & J a more `spit-&-polish' look. ||| Discharged (1945), he recorded soldiers' return to civilian life; made editorial drawings for St. Louis Post-Dispatch, won two Pulitzer Prizes; was war correspondent in Vietnam. |
