Book summary

Media reviews

"On the two other levels where Hanson's book operates he deserves mixed reviews. Try as it might, this is really not THE PERFECT FIRE. The events occurred far too long ago for there to be anything approaching a full record, and so there has to be an immense amount of imaginative reconstruction--fiction, if you will -- which is here, because of its disproportionate mass, all too evident...On the second level--the scientific level, where fire is explained...the book works very well indeed. The chapters that explain the physics of what happened in 1666 are by far the best in the volume...I find them the most readable parts of the story...I found them in addition by far the most captivating and credible--islands of authority in an otherwise somewhat dubious re-creation."
