Book description: Washington, D.C.: C. Alexander, Printer, 1847. Half-leather, marbled paper over boards, lettered in gilt on spine panel. Six editions, published annually 1847-1852 by order of the Secretary of the Navy, bound into one volume, retaining all separate title pages, lacking any original wraps that may have once accompanied. Text block appears to have been trimmed a bit along fore-edge. Front and rear endpapers and blanks are moderately foxed; interior shows scattered foxing, generally light. Exterior shows rubbed edges with some exposure at corners; leather along front joint and spine extremities is somewhat rubbed, and both covers show some surface rubbing and a few abrasions to the marbled paper. Firm binding throughout. 167 + 173 + 144 + 135 + 136 + 140 pp. The interior is fully intact with the exception of the noted (below) partially clipped 1849 title page. Most of the title pages have been signed by the original owner, R. F. Mason, who also indicated in accompanying inscriptions other details: on the 1847 title page, he has written "Pass'd Asst. Surgeon, U.S.A., 1852"; 1848 is unsigned; on the 1849 page (which is clipped around title as if a signature has been removed) are notes that he arrived to San Francisco on August 27, 1849 and received this register on August 28 while stationed on the U.S.S. Savannah at "Saucelito" [Sausalito]; on the 1850 page he shows himself as aboard the U.S.S. Warren at Sausalito in San Francisco Bay; on the 1851 page he has signed as "Asst. Surgeon" and indicated receipt in Nov. 1851; the 1852 page is also signed as "Passed Asst. Surgeon." In later editions of this Register, Mason is listed as Surgeon at the Norfolk [Virginia] Navy-Yard, through at least 1860. We have not conducted additional research to determine whether Mason served during the Civil War.. First Thus. Half-Leather. Good-VG. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

The Saucony Book Shop, located in the heart of scenic rural Berks County, epicenter of Pennsylvania German folk culture (our shop specialty), offers a full range of gently used, rare, and antiquarian books, with many volumes of scholarly merit and an unabashed emphasis on the quaint, the curious, and the utterly obscure. We make no attempt to be a general-service book shop. Our inventory is highly selective, individually chosen from among the hundreds of thousands of books to which we have access annually at auctions, library and estate sales, and through individual scouts and vendors. We do not handle material that does not meet our expectations in terms of condition or interest to our specialized, idiosyncratic customers. Despite maintaining a browsing inventory of more than 15,000 volumes, we have minimized our carbon footprint by maintaining our entire operation -- including inventory storage, packing and shipping, and retail sales -- in less than 1,000 square feet, a cozy little operation housed primarily in a former shoe repair shed alongside the Saucony Creek in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. Store hours: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 12-6 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m.-5 p.m., others by appointment or chance. Do drop by and browse the eclectic selection gracing our shelves, or ask our ferociously over-read staff for recommendations. If traveling from a distance, please call ahead to be sure that we\'re not off at another auction! Selling antiquarian books of merit since 1981. Full search and appraisal services; always keenly interested in purchasing quality used books, whether by the piece or by the bushel. Member, Independent Online Booksellers Association (IOBA). Terms of Sale: All orders are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Full refund on any misrepresented item(s) within 30 days of purchase date. Returned books must arrive in the same condition as they were sent. We use standard ABAA grading and terminology, and we will gladly respond to pre-purchase queries. Happy hunting!
