Elsie Dinsmoreby Finley, Martha
Book DescriptionNew York: Grosset & Dunlap. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. This is the first in a series of "Elsie Dinsmore" books. Living with her uncles family on a southern plantation in the mid-nineteenth century, motherless eight-year-old Elsie finds it difficult to establish a relationship with her worldy father who seems indifferent to her and her religious principles. This book is humorous as well, maybe because it was written in the 1890's; most of Elsie's problems result in her crying. I'm sure there is no other character who cries as much as Elsie, which becomes kind of funny in itself! This is a wonderful book for any age, though, as her life is absorbing, interesting, and difficult all at once. I've read the entire series and often go back to this volume as something like an old friend; despite her problems with her father, he turns out to be a - oh, I can't give it away. 316 pages, probably published in the 1940s or '50s. There is a gift inscription on the decorated endpapers. The yellow binding has lightly worn corners, and is a somewhat darker on the left front which extends to the spine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
