Red stamped hobbit vignette on front board, with a red hood vignette on spine. Red maps on front and rear endpapers. Publisher's flautist device and "1938" on title page. 310 pages, with Chapter VII correctly labeled in text. 4 full-page color illustrations, including frontis. 9 b&w illustrations. Solid book with a moderate spine lean and minor fraying to corners and spine extremities. Light soiling to boards, and a small red stain above "H" in Hobbit, on front board. Half-title page has areas of paper-lift and faint glue discoloration, perhaps from removal of a bookplate. Text and illustrations are nice and bright. Good to VG.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good. Illustrated with 8 beautiful full page colour plates, each with a printed tissue guard, 104 line drawings throughout the text, plus illustrated endpapers at the front and back, all by Charles Robinson. Small bookseller label to the bottom of the front free endpaper. A fine and spotless copy of the book in publishers dark green cloth binding with gilt illustrations and lettering to the front board and spine. In the rare original illustrated dustwrapper, printed in red and green on beige paper. The red ink on the spine is faded and there are a couple of very small chips but overall this is a very smart example of the wrapper on a truly fine book. This first American edition uses sheets from the English edition, prnited by Ballantyne and Company in London. An uncommon survivor in such lovely condition.

Double ruled gilt border on both boards with circular gilt illustration of Alice carrying the pig on the front board. Board edges with gilt ruled line. Gilt inner dentelles and double ruled borders. Multi coloured floral endpapers. Top edge gilt. Purple silk page marker. A bump to the top outer corner of the lower board, but otherwise a near fine copy in an attractive mid twentieth century fine binding.
