Book summary

Contemporary instrumental musician Yanni's intricate, multi-layered compositions have provoked both admiration and loathing in musical circles; however, his public, which has made him a millionaire many times over since his first album release in the mid-1980s, indisputably adores him. His autobiography, YANNI IN WORDS, recounts his childhood in Greece, his early love of music, his encouragement by his parents, and his athletic exploits (he was a national swimming champion). His move to America to study psychology at the University of Minnesota proves crucial to his career, and he begins playing music with local bands, soon branching out on his own to sign a deal with ex-Tangerine Dream member Peter Baumann's Private Music label. His life is not without its rough patches--his relationship with Baumann soon sours--but his rise throughout the '90s is inexorable, encompassing three performances at the Acropolis, multi-platinum-selling albums, and a nine-year liaison with the actress Linda Evans. His emotional breakdown in 1998 is a major setback, however, leading to his temporary retirement from music. The story of his recovery and return to performing forms the centerpiece of YANNI IN WORDS, which includes some choice motivational vignettes sure to inspire his many fans.
