THE CONQUEST OF EVEREST Signed by Hillary, Lowe, Pughby Hunt, Sir John + chapter by Sir Edmund Hillary1st American Edition
Book description: New York: Dutton. VG+/VG 1954. 1st American Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. SIGNED on the front end page by Sir Edmund Hillary (as E. P. Hillary), George Lowe, who was first to greet Sir Hillary on his return from the conquest of Everest, and by L.G.C.E. Pugh, a British physiologist and mountaineer. Pugh conducted studies on the impact of the environment on human physiology and performance during the 1952 British Himalayan Expedition to Mt. Cho Oyu, the 1953 British Himalayan Expedition to Mt. Everest, the 1960-1961 Himalayan Scientific and Mountaineering Expedition to Mt. Everest, and the 1957-1958 Trans-Antarctic Expedition. His research interests were altitude, temperature and exertion. 1st U.S. edition of the official account of the first (at least historicall y, in the West) ascent of Everest. Sketches (numerous) in text by Charles Evans. Foreword by H.R.H. The Duke Of Edinburgh. With A Chapter on the Final Assault by Sir Edmond Hillary. Color frontispiece + 6 other color photographs, 6 maps, plus numerous B&W photographs and illustrations. Laid in are several articles from the general period and slightly after about different climbers trying (with a few succeeding) to climb Everest--and also about some who died trying. Very good plus book: straight, clean, tight, with no handwriting or previous owner markings in the text, with a bit of shelfwear to binding edges and a small scuff to upper spine end and another to front panel (looks like a tiny paper sticker was once there as there's a bit of residue left from it). The price intact dustjacket is clean and crisp, with the spine very slightly bluer and a few edge chips, very minor except at the upper spine end where there are a couple of triangular fairly good-sized chips (just in margins; not interferring with any wording on the dustjacket). Now protected by a removable clear mylar cover. Very nice historical package!; Color and B&W Photos; Signed by Author .
