London: Printed for Gabriel Bedle, and Thomas Collins, 1656.. [16],185,[7]pp., with pp. 81-96 omitted from pagination, as usual. Small octavo. Modern three quarter calf and boards. Engraved frontis by W. Hollar after Mary Evelyn. Early ink ownership inscription on top edge of verso of frontis, a few slightly later ink notes on blank verso of last advert leaf, a couple of early ink marginal highlights, imprint at base of frontis cut into when originally bound, with platemark shaved at fore-edge (as often), otherwise about very good. First edition of this early work by Evelyn, ushered into public view by prefatory verses by Edmund Waller and Evelyn's father-in-law Sir Richard Browne, as well as a letter by Richard Fanshawe. Evelyn's translation precedes his essay, and is printed in parallel with the Latin text. Keynes recounts how the considerable number of printer's errors vexed Evelyn no end, and played a part in his electing not to publish the manuscript of his translation of the five remaining books.
