- Paperback
London: Robert Barker, 1639. Verses in this leaf run from Mark 11:27 through Mark 16:25. Includes Mark 12:28-34, "Love the Lord thy God with all thine heart. . . ." In 1604, King James called a conference at Hampton Court to settle various religious grievances throughout the kingdom. There, Dr. John Rainolds convinced him that a new translation of the Bible was required because those that currently being printed "were corrupt and not answerable to the truth of the original." James readily agreed, as he found the then popular Geneva Bible greatly offensive, and gave the new translators specific instructions, designed to ensure it would conform to the ecclesiology of the Church of England. 54 unpaid scholars worked on the translation, and when it was completed, the original printing of the KJV was published by Robert Barker in 1611. A copy of the title page and finis from this 1639 KJV Bible will be included with this leaf. See accompanying image.. Leaf. Very Good. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.

Tan leather heavily embossed with fruit, leaves and grain with the title on the front board and the spine. A personal Bible of outstanding artistry Beautifully bound and tooled editionThe Bible is a collection of religious texts, writings, or scriptures sacred in Christianity, Judaism, Samaritanism, Islam, Rastafari, and many other faiths. It appears in the form of an anthology, a compilation of texts of a variety of forms that are all linked by the belief that they are collectively revelations of God. These texts include theologically-focused historical accounts, hymns, prayers, proverbs, parables, didactic letters, admonitions, essays, poetry, and prophecies. Believers also generally consider the Bible to be a product of divine inspiration. Those books that are included in the Bible by a tradition or group are called canonical, indicating that the tradition/group views the collection as the true representation of God's word and will. A number of biblical canons have evolved, with overlapping and… Read More

Joseph Sharpless, No. 4, Franklin-Court, (Market-Street, Between 3rd. and 4th Streets, South Side, Philadelphia, 1813; First American Edition; 223 pages; original leather boards; red morocco title label. Noteworthy Bible History instructional, adapted for the understanding of everyday people and the young. First published in England during the latter part of the 18th century under the title "An Abridgment Of The Holy Scriptures," it was widely disseminated in both Britain and on the Continent, and by 1814 had undergone 15 editions. Authored by William Sellon (1730-1790), revered curate of St. James, Clerkenwell from 1767 until his death, who was much esteemed for his personal integrity and power as a lecturer. His grandson, Baker Peter Smith, in an 1852 memoir of Sellon reports that he (Sellon) was facetiously referred to by his colleagues as "silver-tongued Sellon" for his ability to bring his hearers to such heights of enthusiasm with his oratory that donations poured in.…
