London: R. Dutton, 1809. The second edition, corrected (first was 1805) to which is prefixed A Memoir of the Life of the Authoress by Mr. D. Boileau. Complete in Four Volumes. 'This work was originally published under the title of the 'Saracen' and as the romance has been justly celebrated, both abroad and at home, under the name Matilda, it has been resumed in this second edition, not only in compliment to its deceased authoress, but as conveying that preference which gallantry would rather pay to the heroine than the hero'. The author, Sophia Cottin, nee Ristaud (1770-1807) was acclaimed for her novel 'Elizabeth'. Gilt on red title block to spine in six compartments on half calf leather with marbled boards. Wear to boards and edges with light age marking to pages as expected for their age with some loss to spine of Volume 2. Volume 1 - xxiv + 231 pages. Neat contemporary name to front endpaper and neat handwritten repetition in ink of half title page.; Volume 2 - 296 pages. small losses to front and rear endpapers, title page and to some page edges, one page slightly loose and contemporary names and scribbling to endpapers and rear pastedown; Volume 3 - 263 pages. Neat contemporary name and initials to front endpaper; Volume 4 - 262 pages. Neat contemporary name and initials to front endpaper: There are minor small page tears and losses as the paper seems hand made but the volumes are generally tight with the text quite legible. **** A SCARCE COMPLETE SET OF THIS EDITION **** .
