The author outlines reasons for this fact, such as residential segregation in the urban North, the ideal of assimilation, the impact of the Second Vatican Counci, and the separatist tone of Black theology. Using the work of Bernard Longergan and David Tracy, the author argues that Catholic theology itself requires collaboration with Black theologians, quite apart from the moral imperative of racial justice.
