London: Trubner, 1877. First Edition of this updated revision of the quarto 2-volume work "Life & Typography of William Caxton" of 1861-63. Golden-brown faux-leather boards, black titles & embossed decorations. Bevelled edges. Top edge marbled in red & blue. 383 pages, including Appendix & Index. Page 165 on contains a comprehensive list of Caxton's printed books, including posthumous & doubtful works. 18 b/w plates by G. I. F. Tupper; woodcut headpieces, tail-pieces & initials by Noel Humphries. Book was rebound at some point; small strip at top & base of spine of original backstrip are missing, but backstrip has been neatly incorporated into rebinding, & binding is well done & very sound. Light wear to corners, & a few small rubbed areas to spine, slightest smudging to rear board, but otherwise exterior is clean; front board design is quite crisp. One light brown mark to front endpaper, where presumably there used to be a bookplate. Title page has very slight toning, otherwise interior is unmarked & clean. (NB: A First Day Cover from 1976, with 4 Caxton design postage stamps, posted near the site of Caxton's press, is enclosed; both envelope & enclosed card are in Fine condition). . First Edition.
