With them are five Catholic nuns of an American order, they had been captured by the enemy, forced into prostitution, and finally abandoned when American forces overran enemy territory. Each of the nuns is pregnant, and one is so desperately ill that both her and her newborn are imperiled. Nonetheless, all must continue their hazardous flight south or risk capture by the encircling enemy. This opening serves merely to introduce a totally intriguing and captivating cast of magnificent characters in a mesmerizing narrative that ranges from the battlefield's of the Far East to Rome, to America. And ranges in theme from man's complex tender/savage relationship to his fellow man, to his yearning for some embrace of the eternal. This work often startles and shocks; it reveals both the grim nadir of the crushed being, and the glorious heights of the triumphant spirit. It reaches and touches the very core of living. Here is a novel of such power and such strength in portrayal that it contends for an enduring place in our literature. Forceful in impact, dramatic in action, rich in thought. Shadow of God, is that rare accomplishment of few authors, a novel of enormous intensity, that will continue to grow in the reader's mind long after the book is closed. This was Frank Rooney's 5th work.
