Lonon: [Printed by] G. Woodfall, 1811. First edition, privately printed. Octavo. 39, [1, blank] pp. One folding table. Unbound, in a red cloth chemise. A fine copy of this very rare and pamphlet. In contrast to the more lyrical narratives on ballooning which had been published up to this point, this privately printed account of an early balloon ascent provides detailed scientific observations of the voyage. Beaufoy took readings with a watch, barometer, thermometer, hygrometer, electrometer, mariner's compass, and a needle compass; he also performed experiments with numerous bottles of champagne during the flight. The balloonist on the flight, James Sadler, was an experienced aeronaut who had already been constructing a balloon when the first ascents were made in 1783 and 1784; he became the first native-born Englishman to fly in a balloon. An important and valuable work.
