Book desription: Lyons: De Tournes, 1564. Second edition. Octavo (6 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches). [iv, 178] pp. With 178 woodcut illustrations by Bernard Salomon, each enclosed in one of many distinctive and wide woodcut borders (also by Salomon). Contemporary speckled brown calf, expertly rebacked retaining the original spine, spine with gilt compartments and lettering. Some light rubbing to extremities, corners worn; lower margin of title page and five additional leaves trimmed (not affecting text or images). Overall, a very good copy of this scarce and important illustrated book (the last copy at auction was in 1992). Perhaps no name is more intimately associated with the renaissance of French book illustration than that of Bernard Salomon, foremost designer for the publisher Jean de Tournes of Lyon. Working for de Tournes, Salomon's works intersect with the intellectual, religious and cultural concerns of mid-16th-century France. The illustrators of many later editions of Ovid, including Virgil Solis, based their work on that of Salomon. This is commonly regarded as Salomon's greatest work. The suite of illustrations was eventually enlarged to one hundred and ninety-four ansd was in use by the publishing house of de Tourne until 1609.
