Description
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1863 This is a very scarce US first edition in the original purple cloth. Published by Harper & Brothers [New York] in 1863, the title page reads: Reprinted from the Cornhill Magazine, which was edited by Thackeray. The date 1863 is given below the publishers details on the title page. The original boards are now faded with areas that show what the purple boards would have looked like 145 years ago. The spine with the gilt lettering is now faded and the gilt is barely legible, with knocks to the top and bottom of the spine. The frontispiece Sir J-sh-a R-n-lds in a domino. Dr G-ldsm-th in an old English dress is fantastic and is separated from the title page by its original tissue guard. This book has excellent illustrations throughout on relatively clean pages with only occasional minor light foxing; complete with the Harper & Brothers 8-page catalogue to the end of the book.An excellent example of this hard to find first edition by William Makepeace Thackeray . First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Good/No Jacket.
