Book summary

Kathy Gannon's long tenure as an AP correspondent in Afghanistan, from the mid-1980s through 2005, informs her in-depth report on the myriad forces at play following the Russian withdrawal. In this short book, Gannon chronicles both the rule of the mujahideen and the subsequent rule of the Taliban, as she examines the key personalities involved in the power politics there, and the many ways it is played out among Afghanistan's various factions. She identifies and sharply criticizes those who brought murder and chaos to the region, including Musharaff of Pakistan. Gannon points to a decade of missteps by both the U.N. and the Americans, including missed opportunities to support moderating forces within both factions. She provides new information of the rise of Osama bin Laden, with an analysis of the world post-9/11 that draws on her experience living among the Afghan people.

Media reviews

"Gannon tells a compelling first-person story of politics during these years, relying on her contacts with the great and the small and her reporter's eye for the seemingly minor details that illuminate much."

Book desription: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, Inc., Indianapolis/New York:. Hardcover with dustjacket. Like New. Afghanistan is one of the world's poorest countries, cradled by mountains to the south and east, desert to the west, and the fractious tribal lands to the north. For much of its history it has been a land visited only by people on their way to where else. Not, though, by Kathy Gannon. She arrived in 1986 with dreams of being a foreign correspondent, expecting that she might move on soon afterwards. She stayed eighteen years, becoming in time the most knowledgeable Western journalist to observe the cataclysms that rocked the region - and after 2001 went on to convulse the world. She brings this brilliant and affectionate insight to provide a gripping portrait of a nation that was abused and idly discarded by the West, used as an incubator for religious extremismby its neighbors, and hugely, fatally misunderstood by almost everyone. Includes an Index. "No Western journalist knew Afghanistan under the Taliban better than Kathy Gannon. She guided so many of us through this fascinating land during its most brutal era. She knew its beleaguered people and its ruthless leaders. She speaks with particular authority about Afghanistan's heartbreaking history." - Robin Wright, journalist and author of Sacred Rage: The Wrath of Militant Islam and The Last Great Revolution ISBN: 1586483129.
