Book desription: 1795. Brown leather boards, brown leather cloth tape on spine. 406 pages, plus lengthy Index. No title page, or publisher given. Pages 3 - 19 contain, as the proceedings of the First Congress of the United States (held in New York in 1789), the Twelve Amendments to the Constitution, followed by Acts of the individual states ratifying the various Amendments. An interesting aspect of this copy is that beside each Article (Amendment) are notations, in the form of neat, small ink numbers (in handwriting of the period), which appear to be a tally of the votes on that particular Amendment; in the case of the First Amendment, there are also 2 lists of the initials of the states involved, with numbers & checkmarks. The book is signed in ink by the owner, probably the same hand, with the date 1795. The rest of the book contains proceedings of the Second Congress, begun in Philadelphia on Monday, the 24th of October, one thousand seven hundred & ninety-one, followed by the wording of treaties between the United States & the Kings of Britain, France, Sweden, etc., plus many treaties with Indian tribes. The latest document is dated 1795, & as that is the date of the signature in the front of the book, we assume that that is the date the book was published. Binding is sound. Board corners are bumped & worn; boards are rubbed, but sound & clean. This is an ex-library copy, & a long time ago the spine was reinforced with ugly dark brown cloth tape, with the words "Second Congress of the U.S., Vol.2, 1789" & some library numbers written on the spine in white ink. Ancient library label on front endpaper; old ink numbers on flyleaf; no other apparent library marks. Most of the text is toned, to a greater or lesser degree, though the page margins remain white; most pages have ancient, light, horizontal waviness; light foxing to preliminary pages; front endpaper has an interior tear, with a small piece missing in the center. Otherwise (apart from the 18th-century notations to the Amendments), the pages are unmarked, clean, legible. An interesting early copy. . Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. Duodecimo.
