London: Chatto and Windus, 1939. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. Rey, Hans Augusto. Very good copy with rare dust jacket. This is the first book that was written by Hans Augusto Rey and features the pictorial prototype for the Curious George monkey character for which he is better known. Raffy in this book is a giraffe, first inspired by a cartoon character that Rey drew for a French newspaper and this wonderfully illustrated tale sets out his exploits with a team of 9 monkeys. The chromolithographs, which feature on every page, are wonderful. There are also 10 full page chromos and a double page one. The subject matter is as sweet as anything, the monkeys sitting on the giraffe's head in order to be raised above the rain cloud; the giraffe stretching his neck to form a bridge for the monkeys across a ravine - wonderful! The last page is a piece of music, where the giraffe is bent to form the clef and the monkeys form the notes on the staves. As with all of Rey's books this was actually written by his wife Margret, but she is not attributed. This book was also published in France, where Raffy was apparently called Cecily G. Specific Condition: Dust Jacket: Edge tears and staining to bottom rear, but complete. Binding: Bright and tight - clearly has benefitted from protection offered by dust jacket. Two corners slightly rubbed and slight bruise to one edge (c. 1 inch). Interior: Small water stain to bottom right corner of some of the pages - not near to the illustrations, otherwise very good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.
